| Subcontractor | Department of Defense | PROJECT NU-1
TITLE: CRITICAL MATERIALS FOR PASSIVE ELECTRONIC WARFARE COUNTERMEASURES
DOMAIN: SHIELDING
THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH TASK IS TO DEVELOP AND INTEGRATE FSL/AUTOTUNE FILTER (ATF) COMPONENTS ON FUNCTIONAL SUBSTRATES AND OR SEMICONDUCTORS – THESE MAY INCLUDE SI, GAAS, AND WIDE BANDGAP SEMICONDUCTORS SUCH AS GAN, SIC, AND DIAMOND.
TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES
1. DEVELOP FSL/ATF MATERIALS HAVING ULTRALOW GILBERT DAMPING PROPERTIES SUITABLE FOR X-KUBAND OPERATIONS.
2. DEMONSTRATE INTEGRATION OF FSL/ATF TO FUNCTIONAL SUBSTRATES AND OR SEMICONDUCTORS SUCH AS SI, GAAS, GAN, SIC, GAO, AND DIAMOND.
PROJECT NU-2
TITLE: MULTI-PHYSICS MULTI-SCALE MODELS OF BIOLOGICAL & NEURAL TISSUE RESPONSES TO EXOGENOUS ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS
DOMAIN: MODELING
THE ELECTRIC FIELDS INDUCED IN THE BRAIN BY EXTERNAL HIGH FREQUENCY ELECTRIC MAGNETIC FIELDS (HF-EMF) SOURCES ARE COMMONLY APPROXIMATED USING FINITE ELEMENT HEAD MODELS. ESTIMATES OF THE ELECTRIC FIELDS EXPERIENCED INSIDE THE SKULL ARE NECESSARY INPUTS INTO BIOPHYSICAL MODELS THAT SIMULATE NEURONAL RESPONSES. SIMULATION OF THE NEURONAL RESPONSE PROVIDES KNOWLEDGE ABOUT STIMULATION MECHANISMS AND STIMULATION THRESHOLDS.
TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES
THE GOAL OF THE PLANNED WORK IS TO DEVELOP THE NECESSARY PIPELINE TO ESTIMATE THE NEURAL RESPONSE TO HF-EMF. THIS PIPELINE INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS:
1. CREATION OF A REALISTIC HEAD MODEL;
2. INTRACRANIAL ELECTRIC FIELD ESTIMATION;
3. NEURAL ACTIVATION MODELING.
PROJECT NU-3
TITLE: IMPACT OF TERAHERTZ RADIATION ON THE HUMAN BODY: SUBCELLULAR, CELLULAR, AND TISSUE MODELS
DOMAIN: MODELING
TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES
THE GOAL OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO STUDY THE IMPACT OF SUCH SUB-TERAHERTZ AND TERAHERTZ RADIATION ON THE HUMAN BODY AT THE SUB-CELLULAR, CELLULAR, AND TISSUE LEVELS. THE INPUTS TO OUR MODELS WILL INCLUDE FREQUENCY, POWER, DIRECTIVITY//SPOT SIZE, AND BANDWIDTH/TEMPORAL DYNAMICS OF THE RADIATED FIELDS. THE OUTPUTS WILL INCLUDE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION AND TEMPORAL EVOLUTION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD INTENSITY AND TEMPERATURE. THIS EFFORT WILL LEVERAGE THE ONE-OF-A-KIND TERAHERTZ COMMUNICATIONS AND SENSING PLATFORM AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY AND BUILD ON OUR
RECENT PRELIMINARY WORKS.
[OPTION] PROJECT NU-4
TITLE: IMAGING THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF NON-IONIZING RADIOFREQUENCY RADIATION
DOMAIN: MODELING
TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES
THE RELATIVE INFLUENCE OF THERMAL VERSUS NON-THERMAL EFFECTS ON BIOLOGICAL TISSUE REMAINS WIDELY DISPUTED AMONG INVESTIGATORS AND REGULATING AGENCIES. IMPORTANTLY, OUR MULTIMODAL AND MULTI-SCALE APPROACH PERMIT MORE DETAILED INVESTIGATIONS FOR THERMALLY- AND NON-THERMALLY MEDIATED PATHOLOGICAL DISRUPTIONS. THE EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS WILL YIELD MORE INSIGHT INTO THE PUTATIVE MECHANISMS BY WHICH RF RADIATION MODULATES THE BIOLOGICAL MICROENVIRONMENT, AND OUR FINDINGS WILL HELP DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL REGULATING AGENCIES ESTABLISH MORE JUDICIOUS EXPOSURE GUIDELINES FOR HIGH FREQUENCY RF RADIATION. 555128-78050 Parent award context Parent award agency: Department of Defense · Department of the Army Parent award NAICS: 541715 Parent award performance state: MA Parent award description: TASK ORDER 2 UNDER BASE IDIQ W911QX23D0004 FOR R&D SERVICES TO RESEARCH NON-IONIZING ELECTROMAGNETC RADIATION EFFECTS (NIEMRE). A TOTAL OF 130 SERUM SAMPLES WILL BE PROVIDED BY DR. RICHARD WAMAI.
O 65 VL-POSITIVE SAMPLES: THESE SAMPLES WILL BE CONFIRMED TO BE VL POSITIVE USING TWO
METHODS:
GOLD STANDARD: MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF SPLENIC ASPIRATES FOR THE PRESENCE OF
AMASTIGOTES.
DIRECT AGGLUTINATION TEST (DAT) AND RK39 TEST FROM GLOBAL ACCESS DIAGNOSTICS.
O 65 VL-NEGATIVE SAMPLES: THESE WILL SERVE AS NEGATIVE CONTROLS, COLLECTED FROM REGIONS IN
KENYA NON-ENDEMIC TO VL.
THE SAMPLES WILL BE IRREVERSIBLY DE-IDENTIFIED BEFORE SHARING AND HAVE BEEN OBTAINED UNDER PRIOR IRB APPROVALS
FROM STUDIES CONDUCTED IN KENYA.
2. SERUM SAMPLES FROM ETHIOPIA:
AN ADDITIONAL 130 SERUM SAMPLES WILL BE PROVIDED BY DR. RICHARD WAMAI, SOURCED FROM DR. ERMIAS
DIRO, AND COLLECTED FROM INDIVIDUALS RESIDING IN VL-ENDEMIC (POSITIVES) AND VL NON-ENDEMIC
(NEGATIVES) REGIONS IN ETHIOPIA.
O 65 VL-POSITIVE SAMPLES: THESE SAMPLES WILL BE CONFIRMED TO BE VL POSITIVE USING:
GOLD STANDARD: MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF PARASITES IN SPLENIC OR BONE MARROW
ASPIRATES.
