DROP-STITCH MANUFACTURING IMPROVEMENTS TO INCREASE PRODUCTION RATE AND PRODUCT PERFORMANCE. DROP-STITCH PRESENTS UNIQUE CHALLENGES TO TRADITIONAL COATED FABRIC MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES. AS AN EMERGING TECHNOLOGY, DROP-STITCH REQUIRES INNOVATIONS IN MANUFACTURING TO BE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED AND APPLIED. RECREATIONAL SECTOR DROP-STITCH DOES NOT MEET THE BERRY AMENDMENT REQUIREMENT AND THE FABRICATION PROCESS DOES NOT SCALE TO THE SIZE OF THE PANELS NEEDED FOR THE IV. THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO SOLUTIONS FOR RELIABLY AND REPEATABLY WELDING THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE (TPU) DROP-STITCH PANELS IN A COST-EFFECTIVE MANNER. SOME EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES USED ON SIMILARLY COATED FABRICS CAN BE USED AS A STARTING POINT TO TACKLE THE PROBLEMS OF MATERIAL HANDLING, ALIGNMENT, SENSING, HEAT SOURCE, PRESSURE APPLICATION, ETC. DROP-STITCH TECHNOLOGY IS STILL YOUNG AND HAS MANY UNKNOWNS, SO INDUSTRY PARTNERS DO NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO IMPLEMENT ON THEIR OWN.
