3.1 MULTI-MODAL MODELING THE SUBCONTRACTOR IN CONJUNCTION WITH AIR FORCE RESEARCH LABORATORY 711 HPW/RHWAI HUMAN LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGY TEAM (HLT-T) WILL CONDUCT RESEARCH TO UTILIZE VISUAL AND AUDIO DOMAIN FEATURES TO ENHANCE INFORMATION RETRIEVAL. RESEARCH AREAS FOR THIS PROJECT INCLUDES: 1. UTILIZE OBJECT DETECTION AND ACTION RECOGNITION TO ENHANCE INFORMATION RETRIEVAL AND IMPROVE MACHINE TRANSLATION 2. COPING WITH MISSING DATA IN ONE OR MORE MODALITIES 3. EXTENSION OF IMAGE PROCESSING TO VIDEO PROCESSING TO ENHANCE LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGIES AND INFORMATION RETRIEVAL 4. SEMANTIC LABELLING OF IMAGES FOR MULTIMODAL DATASETS 5. USING THE IMAGE AS THE COMMONALITY BETWEEN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES 6. UTILIZING AVAILABLE MODALITIES TO IMPROVE TRADITIONAL LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGIES 7. INCORPORATING ASR FEATURES TO AUGMENT TRANSLATION AND INFORMATION RETRIEVAL THE PRIORITIES AND TIME LINE OF THE AREAS OF RESEARCH FROM THE ABOVE LIST WILL BE SET BY FEASIBILITY, PRIOR WORK, DATA AVAILABILITY, CUSTOMER PRIORITIES, ETC THE FIRST YEAR OF THE EFFORT WILL BUILD UPON THE ESTABLISHED COMPONENT MODELS AND DATA SETS THE HLT-T HAS DEVELOPED AND UTILIZED IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES AND LANGUAGE PAIRS. HLT-T WILL WORK WITH THE SPONSOR TO DETERMINE ONE OR MORE LANGUAGES OF INTEREST AND TO OBTAIN REPRESENTATIVE MULTI-MODAL DATA SETS FOR TRAINING AND TESTING. IN YEAR 1 THE SUBCONTRACTOR WILL ESTABLISH A BASELINE SYSTEM THAT IS COMPOSED OF INDIVIDUAL MODELS AND PROCESSES AND COMBINE THEIR OUTPUT IN A LATE FUSION APPROACH. THIS WILL ENABLE US TO INCORPORATE ADVANCES IN THESE COMPONENT SYSTEMS INTO THE BASELINE OVER THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT AND WILL ALLOW THE TRANSITION OF THESE COMPONENTS TO THE SPONSOR DURING THE LIFETIME OF THE PROJECT. DURING THIS STAGE OF THE PROJECT THE AUTOMATIC SPEECH RECOGNITION MODELS WILL BE PROVIDED AS GFE BY RHWAI. NEURAL MACHINE TRANSLATION MODELS WILL BE DEVELOPED WITH THE OPEN SOURCE TOOLKITS OPENNMT-TF AND/OR FAIRSEQ. ONCE THE BASELINE SYSTEM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED, WORK WILL BEGIN ON DEVELOPING AN END-TO-END NEURAL SYSTEM THAT INCORPORATES EARLY FUSION OF THE MULTIPLE MODALITIES. THIS WORK WILL UTILIZE THE OPEN SOURCE NEURAL TOOLKIT TENSORFLOW OR FAIRSEQ AS THE BASIS FOR THE END-TO-END SYSTEM. THIS WILL BUILD UPON CURRENT WORK ON END-TO-END AUTOMATIC SPEECH RECOGNITION AND MACHINE TRANSLATION BEING CONDUCT BY RHWAI. AS THIS TECHNOLOGY MATURES, AND NEW CAPABILITIES (I.E. OBJECT DETECTION AND MULTIMODAL MACHINE TRANSLATION) THAT CURRENTLY DO NOT EXIST IN HAYSTACK, WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO HAYSTACK. THESE ADDITIONAL CAPABILITIES WILL FURTHER THE ADVANCED USER INTERFACE CONCEPT WORK HAYSTACK IS CURRENTLY SUPPORTING IN THE BATTLESPACE VISUALIZATION TECHNICAL AREA. THIS PROPOSED NEW WORK SUPPORTS DATA ANALYSIS, INFORMATION DISCOVERY AND WORK AIDING THAT FALL UNDER VISUAL DISPLAY DESIGN AND EVALUATION METHODS.
