| Subcontractor | Department of Defense | ATMOSPHERIC TURBULENCE CAN SIGNIFICANTLY DEGRADE THE OPERATION AND PERFORMANCE OF HIGH-ENERGY LASER
(HEL) WEAPONS AND TARGET ILLUMINATION LASERS (TIL). TURBULENCE INHOMOGENEITIES IN THE ATMOSPHERE DUE
TO TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY FLUCTUATIONS CAUSE THE INDEX OF REFRACTION IN THE ATMOSPHERE TO FLUCTUATE
AND IS COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS OPTICAL TURBULENCE. THE SPATIO-TEMPORAL CHANGES IN THE INDEX OF
REFRACTION, AND TO A LESSER EXTENT PRESSURE, LEAD TO POWER SURGES AND FADES, SPATIAL INCOHERENCE, AND
BEAM WANDER, AMONG OTHER DELETERIOUS EFFECTS ON THE OPERATION OF HEL. TURBULENCE INTENSITY AND THE
SIZE OF TURBULENCE EDDIES IN THE LOWEST LEVEL OF THE ATMOSPHERE MAINLY SCALES WITH ALTITUDE BUT IS
AFFECTED BY MANY FACTORS INCLUDING THERMAL STABILITY, ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, AND WIND SPEED AND
DIRECTION. THEREFORE, THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE INDEX OF REFRACTION FLUCTUATIONS ALONG THE HEL BEAM
PROPAGATION WILL BE IMPACTED BY THE DISTANCE AND ANGLE OF THE BEAM RELATIVE TO THE GROUND AS IT TRAVELS
FROM THE WEAPONS PLATFORM TO THE TARGET POSITION AND PERFORMANCE MAY BE DIFFERENT THAN GROUND-BASED
HEL SYSTEMS.
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS EFFORT IS TO UNDERSTAND THE TIL WAVEFRONT DISTORTION AND ACCURACY CAUSED BY
OPTICAL TURBULENCE IN THE ATMOSPHERE BY LEVERAGING EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS AND HIGH-FIDELITY
COMPUTATIONAL SIMULATIONS TO IMPROVE TARGET ACQUISITION. THE OUTCOMES OF THIS OBJECTIVE WILL BE
GUIDANCE ON THE WAVEFRONT DISTORTION AND UNCERTAINTY OF TARGETING DUE TO VARIOUS ATMOSPHERIC
TURBULENCE CHARACTERISTICS.
