| Subcontractor | Department of Defense | THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT DESIRE TO IMPROVE THE LITERACY OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS AT THE DAU WITH REGARD TO DIGITAL ENGINEERING AND DIGITAL SYSTEMS. THIS NEED STEMS FROM THE GROWING USE OF DIGITAL ENGINEERING TO REPRESENT COMPLEX SYSTEMS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFECYCLE. FUTURE DAU ENGINEERING STUDENTS MUST BE TAUGHT HOW TO CREATE, EVALUATE, AND USE DE METHODS TO SPECIFY, EVALUATE, MANAGE SYSTEMS DURING THE DOD ACQUISITION PROCESS.
THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL BUILD UPON PRIOR SERC RESEARCH TO CONSTRUCT DE SIMULATIONS AND SUPPORTING EDUCATIONAL
MATERIALS FOR USE IN THE DAU CURRICULUM TO SUPPLANT OR SUPPLEMENT EXISTING TEXTBOOKS ON SYSTEMS ENGINEERING. A MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL BE CONDUCTING A THOROUGH EVALUATION OF THE EXISTING SERC DE SYSTEMS AND MODELS WITH REGARD TO THE ASPECTS OF DIGITAL ENGINEERING AND THE ACQUISITION PROCESS. THE COLLECTION OF CANDIDATE SYSTEMS AND MODELS WILL ALSO BE EVALUATED FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF INTEROPERABILITY. THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL USE THE RESULTS OF THESE EVALUATIONS TO IDENTIFY SYSTEMS AND MODELS THAT SHOULD BE MODIFIED OR DEVELOPED FOR INCLUSION IN THIS PROJECT, E.G. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) OR SOFTWARE-BASED SYSTEMS.
FURTHERMORE, THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM, THE TECHNOLOGICAL AND ENGINEERING RESPONSE, AND THE OVERARCHING CONTEXT OF THE PROBLEM AND THE RESULTING SIMULATIONS MUST RECREATE REAL-WORLD CONSTRAINTS AND OPERATIONAL SCENARIOS. WHEREVER POSSIBLE, THIS DEVELOPMENT SHOULD LEVERAGE THE RESEARCH ALREADY CONDUCTED WITHIN THE SERC TO REALIZE COST AND SCHEDULE EFFICIENCIES €€Œ AND SHOULD ALLOW THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH WITHIN THE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING EDUCATIONAL ECOSYSTEM IN GENERAL AND DAU IN PARTICULAR TO PROVIDE STUDENTS, FACULTY, PRACTITIONERS, AND RESEARCHERS WITH A
DIGITAL ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSET THAT CAN SUPPORT THE CONTINUED TRANSITION OF THE DOD AND THE RELATED DEFENSE INDUSTRIAL BASE. IT IS AN ASPIRATION OF THIS PROJECT THAT THIS DIGITAL ENGINEERING SIMULATION COULD PROVIDE A COMMON TOUCHSTONE FOR NUMEROUS ASPECTS OF THE DAU CURRICULUM INTO THE FUTURE. IN THIS REGARD, THE SIMULATION SHOULD BE ARCHITECTED IN A MANNER THAT ALLOWS FUTURE EXTENSIBILITY INTO ADDITIONAL DISCIPLINARY AREAS. 2103519-01 Parent award context Parent award agency: Department of Defense · Washington Headquarters Services Parent award NAICS: 541715 Parent award performance state: NJ Parent award description: WASHINGTON HEADQUARTERS SERVICES RESEARCH TASK (WRT) 1043, DEFENSE ACQUISITION UNIVERSITY (DAU) - DIGITAL ENGINEERING SIMULATION FOR SYTSEMS ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTER (SERC) View parent award on USAspending | HQ003419D0003USAspending | $80,000 | Sep 1, 2023 | — – — |
