| Subcontractor | Department of Defense | ORBITAL WELDING FOR ALUMINUM TUBES - THE F-35 PRODUCTION TUBE SHOP WELDS A WIDE VARIETY OF ALUMINUM ALLOY TUBES THAT ARE SAFETY CRITICAL TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THE AIRCRAFT. THESE ALUMINUM TUBES HAVE "CLASS A" TYPE WELDS, THE FAILURE OF WHICH WOULD ENDANGER PERSONNEL AND SYSTEMS. THEY ALSO HAVE A HIGH SCRAP RATE DUE TO WELD INSPECTION FAILURES DUE TO POROSITY, CRACKING, BURN-THROUGH, ETC. CURRENTLY MECHANICS MANUALLY GAS TUNGSTEN ARC WELD (GTAW) ALUMINUM TUBES USING ROTATING FIXTURES WHILE THEY MANUALLY FEED FILLER METAL INTO THE ARC. THERE IS HIGH VARIABILITY BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL MECHANICS DEPENDING ON THEIR SKILL LEVEL. TO REDUCE HIGH SCRAP RATES, AN AUTOMATED ORBITAL WELDING PROCESS COULD REDUCE VARIATION SEEN IN PRODUCTION BETWEEN MECHANICS AND INCREASE FIRST TIME WELD QUALITY. A REPEATABLE AND ACCURATE SOLUTION TO MAKE €œCLASS A€Ͽ½ TYPE WELDS IS NEEDED TO REDUCE HIGH SCRAP RATES FOR ALUMINUM TUBE WELDING PRODUCTION. TO EFFICIENTLY SUPPORT PRODUCTION, AN AUTOMATED (OR MECHANIZED) ORBITAL SOLUTION IS REQUIRED TO INCREASE FIRST PASS YIELD AND ELIMINATE PROCESS WASTE, LM AERO SEEKS TO IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP AN ORBITAL WELDING SOLUTION TO REPLACE MANUAL €œCLASS A€Ͽ½ WELDING OF ALUMINUM TUBES IN F-35 PRODUCTION.
OBJECTIVES STATEMENT:
- A REPEATABLE AND ACCURATE SOLUTION TO MAKE €œCLASS A€Ͽ½ TYPE WELDS IS NEEDED TO REDUCE HIGH SCRAP RATES FOR ALUMINUM TUBE WELDING PRODUCTION.
APPROACH STATEMENT:
- ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL (ATI), IN ITS ROLE AS THE CNM, WILL BE THE PRIME CONTRACTOR FOR THIS EFFORT AND WILL SUBCONTRACT WITH LM AERO AND EWI TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT. LM AERO, WORKING JOINTLY WITH EWI, WILL LEAD THE TECHNICAL EFFORT TO IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP AN ORBITAL WELDING SYSTEM. THE PROJECT IS A TWO PHASE, 29 MONTH EFFORT STARTING IN THE THIRD QUARTER OF FISCAL YEAR 2023 AND ENDING IN THE FOURTH QUARTER OF FISCAL YEAR 2025.
BENEFIT/PAYOFF STATEMENT:
- THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ORBITAL WELDING SYSTEM / PROCESS CAPABLE OF MEETING OR EXCEEDING LM AERO €œCLASS A€Ͽ½ ALUMINUM TUBE PRODUCTION WELDING REQUIREMENTS WILL INCREASE FIRST PASS INSPECTION YIELD BY 12% AS A RESULT OF THIS MANTECH PROJECT. THE SYSTEM/PROCESS COULD BE LEVERAGED ACROSS ANY PLATFORM IN NEED OF CLASS A ALUMINUM ORBITAL TUBE WELDING.
- THE SOLUTION DEVELOPED THOUGH THIS PROJECT IS ANTICIPATED TO BE IMPLEMENTED AT LOCKHEED MARTIN AERONAUTICS FACILITY FOLLOWING SUCCESSFUL EXECUTION OF THE EFFORT. THIS PROJECT IS ANTICIPATED TO RESULT IN A 5-YEAR SAVINGS OF $5,552,000 FOR A 5-YEAR ROI OF [1.02:1] 2022-539-002 Parent award context Parent award agency: Department of Defense · Department of the Navy Parent award NAICS: 541715 Parent award performance state: VA Parent award description: MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY (MANTECH) - CNM FY23 PROJECTS View parent award on USAspending | N0001422D7004USAspending | $913,148 | May 17, 2023 | — – — |
