| Subcontractor | Department of Defense | FOR PRIME AWARD OPTIONS 1C AND, IF AWARDED, 2C, DR. ROBIN BAIRD, OF CASCADIA RESEARCH COLLECTIVE (CRC) WILL SUPPORT DR. ANDREWS ON AN
EXPEDITION TO TARGET SHORT-FINNED PILOT WHALES OFF THE ISLAND OF HAWAI'I. DR. BAIRD AND HIS TEAM HAVE SUCCESSFULLY TAGGED OVER 150 ANIMALS OF DIFFERENT
SPECIES AROUND HAWAI'I, AND HAVE COLLECTED EXTENSIVE DATA ON THE BEHAVIOR, MOVEMENTS, AND POPULATION DYNAMICS OF ODONTOCETES IN THIS AREA (E.G.,
SCHORR ET AL., 2009; BAIRD ET AL., 2011, 2012). ENCOUNTER RATES WITH SHORT-FINNED PILOT WHALES OFF HAWAI'I ARE NORMALLY QUITE HIGH (MAHAFFY ET AL.,
2015), AND THEY ARE RELATIVELY EASY TO APPROACH.
DR. BAIRD AND HIS TEAM WILL IDENTIFY GOOD CANDIDATES FOR TAGGING IN THIS FIELD TRIAL PROJECT, PRIMARILY BY ATTEMPTING TO FIND AND WORK WITH PILOT WHALE
GROUPS THAT TEND TO SPEND THE MAJORITY OF THEIR TIME ON THE WEST, KONA, COAST OF HAWAI'I, WHERE THE CONDITIONS PERMIT WORKING FROM A SMALL BOAT ON
MOST DAYS. DR. BAIRD AND HIS TEAM HAVE PREVIOUSLY SUPPORTED DR. ANDREWS WHEN CONDUCTING OTHER TAG DEVELOPMENT FIELD TRIALS WITH SHORT-FINNED PILOT
WHALES, AND IT HAS BEEN AN EXTREMELY PRODUCTIVE SITE, HAVING BEEN QUITE IMPORTANT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LIMPET TAG AND THE ONGOING
DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOUND AND MOTION RECORDING AND TRANSMITTING (SMRT) TAG. DR. BAIRD AND HIS TEAM WILL MAKE USE OF THEIR EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE
OF THE BEHAVIOR OF SHORT-FINNED PILOT WHALES AND THEIR COMPREHENSIVE PHOTO-IDENTIFICATION CATALOG TO CHOOSE TAGGING CANDIDATES AND TO CONDUCT
FOLLOW-UP OBSERVATIONS OF THE TAGGED INDIVIDUALS. CRC WILL PROVIDE DR. ANDREWS WITH ALL PHOTOGRAPHS AND OBSERVATIONS REPORTS FROM THE TAGGING
EVENTS AND ANY SUBSEQUENT RESIGHTINGS OF THE PREVIOUSLY TAGGED PILOT WHALES. CRC WILL ALSO PROVIDE THEIR EXPERT OPINION ON THE NEW TAG ATTACHMENT
DESIGNS, ESPECIALLY IN REGARDS TO THEIR USE IN THE FIELD AND HOW THE DESIGNS MAY AFFECT THE TAGGED WHALES. THIS WOULD INCLUDE OBSERVATIONS OF THE
REACTIONS OF THE WHALES TO THE TAGGING EVENT AND SUBSEQUENT BEHAVIOR AND APPEARANCE OF THE TAGGING WOUNDS.
FOR OPTION 3, IF AWARDED, CRC WILL COLLABORATE WITH DR. ANDREWS IN CONDUCTING FOLLOW-UP STUDIES OF TAGGED WHALES TO ACCURATELY QUANTIFY WOUND
HEALING AND THE EFFECTS OF TAGGING ON WHALE SURVIVAL, REPRODUCTION, AND BEHAVIOR. THIS WOULD INCLUDE BOAT EXPEDITIONS TO SEARCH FOR AND OBSERVE
PREVIOUSLY TAGGED WHALES, TO FACILITATE THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEALING OF TAG ATTACHMENT SITES AND THE PERFORMANCE OF DORSAL FIN THERMOREGULATORY
FUNCTION USING HIGH-RESOLUTION DIGITAL PHOTOS, HISTOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF BIOPSY SAMPLES AND FLIR IMAGING. CRC WILL ALSO COLLABORATE IN THE
COMPARISON OF THE DIVING AND MOVEMENT BEHAVIOR OF TAGGED ANIMALS. 024CRC-2201 Parent award context Parent award agency: Department of Defense · Department of the Navy Parent award NAICS: 541713 Parent award performance state: CA Parent award description: IMPROVED TAG ATTACHMENT SYSTEM FOR REMOTELY-DEPLOYED MEDIUM-TERM CETACEAN TAGS View parent award on USAspending | — | $65,000 | Jul 1, 2022 | — – — |
